Who is Jiu-Jitsu Journeyman?

My name is James Rowlinson and I am a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt under Reagan Rumbold and Stephen Walton out of Wolves Den, a mixed martial arts gym in Perth, Western Australia. I have been coaching jiu-jitsu at the den since 2018 and have been training there since around 2012 and I am 37 years of age. I have decided to start this blog to explore and delve through aspects of jiu-jitsu other than the techniques. I feel you can go anywhere to find the techniques and moves for jiu-jitsu, but is there a place that helps unpack the issues that practitioners are dealing with on and off the mats day in and day out? I’m talking about dealing with the ups and downs, the ebb and flow of the BJJ journey and anything else I can put fingers to keys about.

I have a wife and two young daughters aged 8 and 10, my wife is a blue belt in BJJ and both of my daughters train in judo and more recently have begun their BJJ journey. I teach and train BJJ outside of working full time as a landscaper, being a father and a husband.

I’m an open book in all aspects of my life and I love talking to my peers and students about life and jiu-jitsu so hopefully the lessons I have learned and the information gathered on my journey thus far, will be of some use or entertainment to you on yours.

Cheers James Rowlinson
